Here are a few age-friendly ideas we love:

Home Phones (ages 6–12+) No internet. Not mobile. No social. All the connection. Can be a landline or Wi-Fi-based. Check out the Tin Can Kid Phone.

Shared Family Tablets (ages 6–12) – Used in common spaces for games, learning, and family connection (not tucked away in bedrooms). Libraries have excellent kid learning tablets – free of internet but full of education and fun games.

Known & Permitted Screen Time (ages 4–11) – Share identified times where watching a screen/show is allowed. Consider car rides longer than 90 minutes, Saturday morning cartoons on certain channels, Family movie nights, etc.

Digital Cameras (ages 6–12) – Let’s kids explore the world, notice details, and tell stories through photos. And, you have an answer when they ask to use your phone as a camera! Check out Camp Snap Cameras.

STEM Kits & Coding Toys (ages 7–12) – Hands-on, age-appropriate ways to build digital skills without endless scrolling.

Nintendo Switch or Wii for Active Screen Play (ages 6–12) – Sports and movement-based games that get kids off the couch, playing together, and using tech for fun, fitness, and family connection.

Kid-Friendly Connected Watches (ages 6–11) – Great for roaming the neighborhood while parents stay connected for safety. Options vary greatly. Check out TickTalk, BarkWatch, Jr. Track, Gizmo, etc.
